Some define happiness as living a good life, and not just the emotional state. The concept of happiness is different thing to different people.
In fact there are lots of research on happiness. According to professor Sonja Lyubomirsky's book "The How of Happiness", she says that happiness is: 50 percent of it comes is genetically determined. 10 percent is influenced by life circumstances and situation, and 40 percent comes from self-control.
