Life should be about needs, not so much about desires
According to Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer Jean-Jacques Rousseau, there are two ways to make a man richer, you either give him more money or curb his desires.
The problem is we all are ingrained with a desire for more. From the moment we can understand the nature of stuff, we desire more of it.
That's why we are saddled with stress, frustrations and disappointment. But if we can just take care of our essential needs, and desire less superficial material wants. We should know the difference between the wants and the needs.
The pursuit and purchase of physical possessions will never actually satisfy our desire for happiness. It is only temporary fulfillment, but the true happiness found in buying a new stuff rarely lasts longer than a few days. It is what they called retail therapy.
There is this Filipino proverb which goes like this: If you make a habit of buying things you do not need, you will soon be selling things you do.”
